It is 5:01...and you are listening to Los Angeles...

It has been a while folks, but I honestly haven’t been that compelled to write on the blog as of late. I think mostly because things have cranked up pretty heavily at work. It’s weird, in the beginning of a project you are supposed to (or at least I think you are supposed to) have the creative ramp up. The point where you have died down to zero from the last gig, and then you slowly throttle up to full speed and find your pace. But right now I feel like I have gone from a dead stop to full speed, like I am trying to hold on to the tail section of a rocket as it blasts off to freakin’ space. The strange thing is I have a lot more confidence in what I am doing now…I mean I know what it is I want to do. But trying to get it 'done' seems to be getting in the way.

Imagine this…it is like trying to write a term paper while running a mile in the rain with your coach pacing alongside you screaming for you to “move faster!” Perhaps I am over dramatizing it a bit…in fact I know I am over dramatizing it a bit. But you get the point.

I think I am just experiencing a little creative block or something. But at the end of the day this is a job, so being creative ‘on call’ is part of that job. Sometimes that is so much easier said than done. Only 24 hours ago I felt pretty damn good about everything we are doing…but what goes up must come down. I guess I am still good with where things are at right now, but there is still a ton of work. And some major points of where the story is going right now are starting to lose their luster. Perhaps I am allowing the excess noise to get in the way you know? Yeah maybe that is it…I just need to step back from things and take a look from a different perspective and I will see it.

Man that sounds convincing to me. Maybe it will work?

Nice, I haven’t written in a while and all I am doing now is bitching like I just skinned my knee playing kickball. That is lame. I mean the game is doing really well out there. People seem to be enjoying it. Well except that cat from the action-button site…he was not loving life when playing GOW2. Though it seemed the content of the review spoke fairly well of the game…at least what I could understand of it. That thing was more of an incoherent ramble than my post-alpha, late night, sleep deprived posts. Though I am sure it got their site a bunch of traffic. Smart move when you think about it. That is why Kotaku probably picked up on it…I loved the write up about the review that says people should read it “if only to see just why God of War II is so shit.”

Sweet. Perhaps not every gamers cup of tea, probably not the greatest game ever made, but ‘so shit.’ Maybe I am just biased but I really don’t see it as shit. But this is coming from a site that is the gaming equivalent of the freaking “Bennifer report!”…so whatever. Well maybe that is not entirely true since I do read the site form time to time and it has some good stuff. But I just wanted to find a way to throw the Bennifer thing in.

I suppose I should feel much differently than I feel now. I should be stoked. Aside from the usual smattering of haters, which you will get no matter what you do, most people are into the experience. I think we finished a great game, a game we are all so freaking proud of, and I am now full speed into another project. Things seem to be going pretty good right now. I should feel pretty damn sweet.

But I don’t. Instead I feel this insane case of writers block, or creative block…whatever. Like there are so many great ideas dangling from a string right in front of me, only someone just hit me in the head with a hammer, and I can’t make out which of the twelve things I see is the real idea. It’s there…I just gotta’ make sure I don’t get hit with a hammer again.

In other non-self indulgent news, Tim Moss, our director of technology has started a blog. After a few years of using my blogging as a weak punch line for his own amusement, he has finally succumbed to the world of the blog. (I think he even said that he was disappointed in the Wii…get HIM!!!) I imagine it is because he has a lot more free time on his hands right now…though that will all change when his kid arrives.

I honestly do not know how anyone does it here. How they can do this job and have a family. I am so completely consumed with the work that I can’t imagine how I would balance this job with trying to see a wife and kids. I can’t even have a freaking pet! I had fish…but even they required more time than I was willing to give. How freaking sad is that?

“Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffin’ glue.”

I am sure this is just me though, since there are so many people here that have families as well as pets. They make it work…and god bless em’ for it cause’ it is so not happenin’ for me.

Ok, I have rambled on for long enough, I am going to go to sleep. Tomorrow I will wake up and all will be right in the world.

CORY

yeah i readed that negative review :) it's funny and i do believe everyone is calling them crazy ;) even EDGE magazine was crazy with their 7.

ah well do you have a ps3?

the only negative report i have is, that sony europe is very unclear about the release date :( one says 13th and another 18th & 27th.

oh and what are your thoughts on NINJA GAIDEN SIGMA?

mike

ps. and what are your thoughts on TOO HUMAN? hahaha i think they took a lot of inspiration from god of war.

Jeez Cory, you seem a bit discouraged. This whole blog is kind of a downer...though I can't really say anything since I'm not in your shoes. You'll get inspired soon enough, though - just always have a pen and a shitload of post-its with you at all times. I can see it now.

You're in the middle of a conversation with somebody, and suddenly you have to stop, tell the other person to shut up, whip out the pen, and feverishly write "Having Kratos shove one of his blades through a dude's throat would be a great finisher."

Seriously though, I hope you find your groove soon. Following up on God of War II isn't going to be an easy task, but you've already proven that you and the team can kick some serious ass, even while everyone around you is gabbing about next-gen gaming.

Speaking of gabbing, I've seen Moss' blog a few times. It seems as though he does nothing but talk about how great God of War is and how almost everything else on the market sucks in comparison. Not that I don't agree but...c'mon, try and be a bit more humble.

why did you change the voice of zeus from PAUL EIDING to COREY BURTON???

It's 6:30AM here and I'm going to bed now.

I've finally found Charlie Wen (blog) and www.islandofrhodes.org will be revealing its contents to us all very soon..you must know how interested I am in this matter and why it is especially important to me. A damn good start for a Wednesday. Though I'm positive I'll be rediculously tired when I drive to college in about 4 hours.

~I saw the videos about the mythology of God of War on GameVideos..very nice. Especially the one covering gods..more specifically the segment for Athena. I've always felt there was something going on between the two. Who knows..maybe Jaffe and I will get our wish..MOAR Athena

Cory! I got a PS3, man!! I'm loving it! If you have connections with Phil Harrison, tell him he did a good fucking job with this thing.. I love it.

Creative blocks are a pain, especially when you're time constrained... just don't slit your wrists man! We need GoW3!

If I come off a bit too excited it's just because I'm having loads of fun with my PS3, even with just Resistance. Fucking AAAAAA game!

I just read that idiot's review over at Action Button. Don't listen to that Douche Bag blow hard. Either that site is propped up by Microsoft or the author is completely retarded.

Did you have a look at their site? It's all in black and white. I think I have left nicer creations on Toilet Paper.

Obviously this guy was just trying to piss people off and get people looking at their shitty ass site.

I did notice there was no Register button. I wanted to leave him a comment.

I think that Eiding should have done the voice of Zeus. He's more talented. And that crap site you talked about, Go to gamerankings.com and you'll see the games average score. Pretty high!
And please, can't you just confirm it is GOWIII you are working on and set our sequel-obsessesd hearts at peace?

Gametrailers are idiots..

"God of War III?
Cory Barlog, art director for the original God of War took over as game director for God of War II after David Jaffe shifted focus to his latest project, Calling All Cars. Barlog will most likely head up game development for Sony's most well known secret, God of War III which is expected to be the final installment in the ground breaking series."

Cory, weren't you the Lead Animator in the original God of War?

BTW, 2:47 hours to H hour!

Unknown said...

I run a decently popular website and criticism is always tough to hear after putting a lot of hard work into a project.

It comes with the territory though and I try to focus on the people who enjoy your work (as thousands have with GoW2). With people who do criticize grab take aways but don't let it get you down.

I'm a big fan of the blogs on the santa monica team keep it up!

elmojenkins said...

I'm going to most likely feel really stupid once I know the answer to this, but I don't care. Can someone tell me what Zeus says right before he charges Kratos and they ascend to the battle arena?

Anonymous said...

Hey Cory its Nick from myspace. I really hope this new project is God of War 3. About those bad reviews dont listen to that crap. God of war 2 is a great game. I've shown it to people that arent fanatics of god of war and they still think its a great game. As long as you stay or excede the caliber of god of war 2 the fans will be pleased. I look forward to hearing about your new project even if its a different game. hang in there man, the creative juices will come back. ttyl. peace.

Tapion440 said...

So I heard you're not the director for GoW3 but rather more of an advisor...any truth to this?

With all the horror stories about crunch time and working crazy amounts of hours, I use to wonder how game developers had anytime for a life outside of their job. Then I started reading Hideo Kojima's blog (about a couple years back when they finally started to translate it into English)...completely changed the way I thought about working as a game developers.

All I've heard is that Cory will be an advisor for the psp GOW made by Ready at Dawn Studios. But if you look at the top of Corys' game history on this blog it says un-announced PS3 title - Game Director. I'm just praying that game is GOW3!!! Cory and the team took GOW to a whole new level and I can't wait to see what's in store for GOW3!!! Take it easy Cory. It'll all come together.

Stay cool Cory for when the chips are down. We all got a case of creative block somewhere in our life, some days are better than others.

You can't win everyone's hearts with games, but hey look on the bright side Cory, for ever 10 satisfied GoW2 gamers there's like... .05 unhappy gamers with the game, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Looks like you got Tim to make one, perhaps peer pressure? lol. I would kill the guy for not liking the Wii, but your lucky he didn't say it was shit....this is sounding familiar. :p

But yeah don't let the small things get ya down, just stay positive, think clearly and you'll be fine Cory. Take care Cory and stay cool.

heh. I thought for a second that was a subtle hint to the organization I belong too. Naw it couldn't.

At any rate, I love the game. Playing thru for the 4th time now. Go the soundtrack and love it, save for the last two songs. Shadows fall and TraGIC or whatever. Neither appeal to me. Junkie XL is tight though.

I also picked up the bonus tunes that were not on the CD on iTunes. Hell, I would have rather have those over TraGiC and Shadows Fall, but to eath their own.

And you you my creative friend, You will prevail. It's tough shifting gears and focus so quickly, but the day will come when everything clicks and the team will try to catch up to you.

Hi Cory,

How do you solve the 3rd puzzle on the website (the one with Roman numerals)? Most people have gotten past this by using the cheat (clicking on Proceed twice), so there's no point in keeping the solution a secret anymore. I've spent about half the day trying to figure it out and it's really bothering me. Please tell me, its driving me crazy!.......or at least give me a good hint.......

BTW I noticed a while back that the official strategy guide for the game has random letters printed on the corners of some pages. I thought that this might have something to do with the puzzle, but after trying a bunch of different things, I figured that they were completely unrelated. Is this some sort of secret that you planned for? or is it something that the Bradygames guys did?

Thanks.

spoilers==spoilers===spoilers==spoilers
Some gamers in need of a challenge might want to try the puzzles out for themselves, and if you happen to be one of them, STOP READING! But for those lacking in the patience department, GamePro has decided to walk you through them, step-by-step. The first puzzle is found on the screen containing the outline on the history of the Isle of Rhodes. Within the painting, there are several Greek letters, but the trick is to find the appropriate letters to spell out "KRATOS". The letters must be clicked on in order, and can be found in the following locations:

Kappa (looks like a K) - under the I (Iota), at the center of the column on the right side of the screen
Rho (looks like a P) - in the upper left corner of the screen
Alpha (looks like an A) - bottom right corner of the screen, at the base of the column, next to the soldier
Theta (looks like an arrow pointing up) - middle left side of the screen, under the large Upsilon, the letter resembling a trident
Omega (the symbol for ohms) - upper right corner of the screen, left of the top of the arch
Sigma (looks like a jagged E) - bottom right corner, next to the soldier's foot

You can choose to watch the video, or click Proceed again, which leads to a puzzle with sliding tiles. Hitting the "Reset" button not only restarts the timer, but also changes the puzzle. Feel free to continue hitting reset until you reach a puzzle that you feel comfortable with.

After that comes yet another video, followed by a page containing an explanation of the creation of the universe, as told by Greek myth. On the bottom of the screen, you'll see a set of Roman numerals and an input box below that, but unfortunately, nobody has figured out how to solve this puzzle... yet. Adding to the frustration is the fact that different users have reported seeing different sets of numbers.

However, there is a way around it. Simply click the "Previous" button to go back to the video, and then double-click the "Proceed" button. That should take you directly to Moss's explanation of HD-Mode. The message states that, to access this mode, you'll need to press and hold L1+L2+L3 (the left analog stick button)+Square+Circle before God of War II starts up. (PS3 users are encouraged to plug their controllers in via USB port.) If done correctly, the "SCEA Presents" legal screen will appear in a shade of purple as opposed to its normal white background. When you're done reading, click the button marked "You Seek an Audience with the Fates", and that will take you straight to the countdown.

Anonymous said...

Great..a puzzle. I suck at puzzles. I'll get Eternal to help my past the "sliding puzzle" then I can watch the next video..then maybe work on that number puzzle. (with Eternal)

Well guys I havnt gotten past the numeral puzzle yet but i know whats after that and i know about the new countdown... the new countdown seems to be ending in like 10 days and above it, it shows the letter G like for god of war and right below it, there is a CH like a title of the game.. it was cut off like that for a reason to make us think what it may be... could it be gow3? gow PSP??? gow movie??? no one knows. i guess we will just have to wait till the countdown is over.... damn. lol

I did a lot of things. I added the total 1678

I tried breaking it down into the Alphabet.

I figured it was a clue to a name, but I couldn't figure out exactly who.

Eventually I typed Athena since she was Kratos's ally and bam, I got to move on. Now how you get Athena from the numbers I have no idea.

Anonymous guy..Fuck my NUR? I did the same NUR Shinobier did BECAUSE I saw him doing it without health/magic upgrades. I'd hate to be shown up before even starting a run.

A Titan Mode NUR is no problem. I made the GK:TM:NUR (Bonus Play) because I felt it couldn't get any harder then that. I was right.

~I voiced my intentions to do a General Kratos Titan Mode NUR and then he decided to try it out.. now he's gone and completed it. People get the impression it was his idea..that bothers me a bit

qestion, how do i "proceed" from the first site, to got to the puzzles?

shinobier's protect the translator video is NOT Titan Mode. Look at when he's using rage of the titans on the first sorcerer. A bunch of the guys actually gets hits on him, and it does little damage. Dude's a fucking fraud.

Probably normal mode. Even God Mode's harder than that.

Besides, when I try that technique on my Titan mode, the sorcerer always goes after my translator.

Cory, what do I do when my PS3 swallows my SD memory card and I bought it in Greece and I have no warranty for it in Israel's official importer for Sony products?

What I think happened is that the SD slot simply went back somehow (broke or something) and now when I put my card in I can't get it out. This is a major problem and I really don't like it. I knew something bad was coming but not something that involved my cell phone. I mean, now I can't use my cell phone for all the music/video and all that... This sux!

I'm going to be frank with you anonymous..you are not terribly good at this game..I can say this through the small assessment of what you've just said. If you cannot tell what he is doing.. then you could not duplicate it. He has a few copies of the same fights. There is a Titan Mode NUR Translator battle and a General Kratos (check the costumes stats) Bonus Play (urnless) Titan Mode NUR version of the fight.
NOTE: A NUR does not require going without Health/Magic upgrades. It isn't an option for the GK:TM:NUR nor would it be worthwhile to try as it would be impossible. Adding this to a standard NUR gives it a title I refer to as "NUR+"

I'm playing GOW2 on Titan Mode and I'm having serious trouble beating that prick Theseus, I got tired of slamming the controller on the floor.

Does any body outhere have a trick on beating him? I saw that clip on Youtube some guy was playing GOW2 on Titan Mode with No Upgrade Run, how did he do that? Did he play it like that to unlock everything in the game or he was just playing to rub it on our faces? Was he showing us how good he is of a show off or what? Anyway, I need a trick or something to beat that cock sucker Theseus.

Jeano said...

==PEOPLES==PEOPLES==PEOPLES==PEOPLES==

What's the difference between the regular Kratos and General Kratos. Is it how Kratos looked like before he was cursed with his wife and daughter ashes or what?

How to unlock the other costumes? It looked like that video clip of GOW2 playing on Titan Mode with the NUR was on Easy mode or something, because I know for sure those undead soldiers are ferocious and they can kill you with only 2 hits.

On the video clip, the guy who was playing GOW2 took a little damage when those undead soldiers hit him, right?

Does any body know who's going to be the director for GOW3? Is it going to be Dave Jaffe or Cory "The Balrog" Barlog? Since GOW3 might be the last of the series, I want Dave Jaffe to be the director of GOW3 because Cory fucked up GOW2 in many ways for us.

Cory did an "OK" job in GOW2, but I know Dave Jaffe would have done a much better job and does anyone ageee with me?

Jeano, the best advice I can give you for the Theseus fight is to keep your distance. Keep your distance from Theseus on the roof in order to get a better view of the arena. That way you can keep an eye out for the ice spikes. Also keep your distance, but within attack range from the minataurs. That way you don't run into them when you're trying to evade and you don't get caught with any of their attacks. That's all I can tell you? Oh yeah, about that last comment. I don't agree with you at all!!! Cory did a PERFECT job!!! What are the things you found wrong with it?

GMG;

What do you know? You act like you're a superior being when it comes to games, but the way I see it is if you have this much time to beat the game several times already, you must not have an outside life.

Must be nice... I think.

Not really, but I guess that's what some people enjoy. Hope you like living with mommy and daddy until you're 50. Maybe then the people behind the '40 year old virgin' movie will reach out to you to make a movie based on your pathetic life.

Mike, are you playing it on your PS3? The Sixaxis isn't as bad as people say, is it?? I found God of War 1 to be quite fun on the PS3 (Crispier graphics for one, faster as whole for two), and the R2 button (or should I say "Trigger" now?)is easily mashable.

I can't wait to try it on my PS3.

What up Mike,
you finally got your hands on GOW2, right? eventhough it's the US Version, how did it feel playing GOW2? How did you like it? Was it what you were expect GOW2 to be? From a scale 1-10, how can you compared GOW1 vs GOW2? It looks like it's not out in Europe yet.

From what you're saying, you're playing GOW2 in God Mode and you think it's too easy, jut wait when you get to the 1st translator part and further more that 6 waves part before you open the door to Clotho will give you "BLUE BALLS".

I lost count of how many times I got killed playing GOW2 on God Mode and when I finally beat it, I replayed it again just to get my revenge and make them feel the wrath of Kratos, who ever said "REVENGE IS SWEET" sure wasn't kidding.

Right now, I'm playing GOW2 on Titan Mode and I'm trying to beat that prick Theseus for the past 2 days and I can kill him, the fight is so fucking long too, I got my ways around the Minotaurs, but them blue spikes Theseus be summoning are coming out on the floor randomly and they can kill you with just 1 hit and you must do the whole process again.

It's really frustrating when you're doing well playing a game and you get killed by stupid little things and you must do the process over again. So, when you get a chance tell us what you think of GOW2.

Yo what up Elmo,
on your message you said "Jeano, the best advice I can give you for the Theseus fight is to keep your distance. Keep your distance from Theseus on the roof in order to get a better view of the arena. Thanks for the tips Elmo, that guy Theseus is really something else and beside him, the Barbarian King, the Fat Medusa, the 1st Translator level and the 6 waves before you open the door to Clotho, who others are pain in the ass?

I wouldn't word it a "Perfect Job" with GOW2, but Cory could have done it better. Like GOW1 there should have been more detail about the stories. Compare to GOW1, there were not enough CGI movies in GOW2 that tells the story the way GOW1 did it.

Sure the graphics are stunning, the game is good, there are still some bugs that they missed out, I was playing it on God Mode and I couldn't hit the Sisters of Fate at all and it missed out on the litte details as well, I was hoping Kratos would confront Zeus and asked him why he abandoned Kratos as a child or something like that.

After Kratos killed Athena, I thought Zeus would be mad about it and the real fight would started instead "The King of Olympus" fled. Now Kratos is the Master of Time and he went to the past to save the Titans from the Great War and where were the Gods at? What did they say when they saw all the Titans vanished? Things like that makes the game unclear.

They should have open the game more, there were a lot places you thought Kratos could reach hoping for hidden goodies which were not, the controller is kind of messed up, I had to buy a "Rapid Shooter Turbo Controller" for GOW2 just for the Circle button and Kratos moves too slow.

Sent an e-mail to you and your crew a couple of weeks ago (about how we had a blast with GOW2 the day it came out and we're all still playing it!) but I'm sure you guys are either busy or just need a break. That being said I have no idea if you're gonna see this in an e-mail I sent earlier today so I thought I'd throw up a post on your blog too.

I bought about 10 copies of GOW 2 to send to my buds in Iraq and
Afghanistan and they love it! I've gotten nothing but great comments
about how awesome the game is and how lucky I was to have made it on
the extras DVD.

Have you guys at Sony ever thought about working with the Army or Dept
of Defense to provide games/consoles to soldiers in theater (Army term
for Iraq and Afghanistan)? I know a lot of guys have their families
buy and or ship consoles and games to them to have something to play
in the down time but I don't know if anyone has ever thought about the videogame companies getting involved. It'd be great for soldiers and I'm sure its great PR for Sony. Just a thought, I'd love to help with that if its at all possible.

So when are we gonna be able to get the GOW2 soundtrack on CD? Are there gonna be GOW2 statues like for the original? Any contests for GOW 2 schwag? Die hard fans want to know.

Yeah I have a friend who goes to school there but he's OK. Jeano, when I said perfect I really meant the actual interactive gameplay and story-telling are perfect. I mean, no game has been or ever will be PERFECT!! The only flaws are so minor they don't even matter. The only flaws I could see weren't anything Cory did anyway. Like the movies with No Blades of Athena? I agree Kratos does move slower as far as fighting goes, but he walks plenty fast for me. I think the reason they slowed down the combat is to give it a more realistic feel. To make it feel like there's more weight to the blades. Which I think is great. Also, when you asked about the gods not reacting to the titans dissapearance. The reason they didn't know is because of the time in which the titans slipped out. Kratos took them back with him right when they were being banished . So they would've dissapeared anyway. The other thing you said about the movies being too few. I feel the same way David Jaffe does according to a recent interview. He thinks that movies are one of the least important parts of a game. Video games are a different form of entertainment than movies. Video games, unlike movies should evoke emotion through the interactivity and not through cinamatics. I mean, it's great having the movies in there. They add to the whole experience, but without them the game is still a great game. They could have 1 movie or 50 , but for me it will always come down to the gameplay. Oh yeah, Zeus ran off because he's a bitch and didn't want to stick around to get his ass handed to him.

Yo what up Mike, from what you're saying you're pretty much at the end of GOW2, right? I thought there would be a flight of the Phoenix like the Pegaseus area, but this time I thought you would fight the undead soldiers by burning them in the air or something like that, right? And Cory fucked that part by making it so lame and weak.

I like the fact that Kratos used the blades to climb the walls and stuff. There should have been more CGI movies and I think the part where Zeus was destroying Sparta should have been a CGI movie, the Flight of the Phoenix should have been a CGI movie, the introduction and the killing of the Sisters of Fate should also been CGI movie and that's what made GOW1 so great and they not just telling the flashbacks, but they showed them as well and that was a let down in GOW2.

Hey yo Mike, I heard rumors that the US version of GOW1 was different than the European version and the part where you must sacrifice the caged man by burning him was infact a beast, was it true?

Sony Santa Monica did not want to deal with it again by changing this...that... in the game and maybe that's why a lot of peoples said GOW2 could have been done much better and they cut a lot of good levels as well just to please those crying little babies in Germany, the peoples in Germany did not want GOW1 to be released there at all because "It was too violent for them" and they have a history of killing at least 10,000,000 jewish. BITE ME!!!!

When you beat GOW2 on God Mode play it on Titan Mode, record it and put a link on www.youtube.com to show the rest of the world how you're a GOW2 Master and prove the others wrong by doing the 999,999 hit combos as well and when you done with that play it again on Titan Mode with No Upgrade Run (NUR) to gain our respect and how's that sound for a challenge Mike? Just let us know what you think, ok.

I think there should be a website database or something like that for us gamers to say, to give our ideas and to tell what we would like to see in GOW3 and we want Dave Jaffe to be the full head director of GOW3 as well.

Cory Barlog said...

Jeano,

I am sorry that it appears I have let you down with God of War 2, but I do think I need to point a few things out that you might not understand very clearly.

1. CGI - This stands for computer generated imagery...it means basically what it says. All the movies in God of War 1 and god of War 2 were CGI movies since they were all completely generated by a computer. (I.E. no live action)

2. The movies you are talking about are High Resolution, or Hi-Rez, movies created by a studio call Semologic. They are really good and deliver extremely high quality visuals. If I could have my way I would have all the movies be of this quality. Unfortunatly all games have a budget, one that is not limitless. Which brings me to my last point.

3. It would be great to have everything Iwant in the game, but that is fairly unrealistic since there is always a finite amoutn fo time and money allocated to a project. The original design for the Phoenix called for a flight/combat section at the end, but the schedule just did not permit. I would have loved to not cut that, but that is just how game development is...sometimes you gotta cut. The same goes for the Hi-rez movies, the number of movies that ended up in the final game was smaller than what I wanted, but this is the same for both GOW1 and GOW2. Not everything you want intially, ends up in the game in the end. But I still believe that what we did put in GOW2 is really freaking great, better than what we put in to GOW1.

As for your desire for Dave to direct the third one, if there ever is a third one, I respect your opinionn and totally support that you voice it here. I just wanted to make sure you really understood what goes into all this.

Cory

i wanted more vidoes to be high res to but i knew why you couldnt do it. kinda anyway lol. but i liked how the game ended up. and dont lie you know there will be a third one.lol. there is no way a third one wouldnt happen after God of War 2's ending. especially since there is a PSP gmae comin out.

Yo Cory,
I'm flattered that we heard something straight out from you and I know that you're a super busy man and to take the time to answer some of the questions means a lot to me pal.

To tell you the truth I didn't expect any reply from you at all. From what you're saying it looked like Sony fucked you guys over by not investing enough on the GOW2 project, shame on them and I hope they give it all they can on GOW3.

Is there any chance, any way or any how there would be a GOW Special Edition to put the deleted levels or something? We didn't get enough out of the GOW Series at all and because not adding those levels that you guys sweat for makes me think that you all waisted your time on the project and is there any chance that GOW for PSP might make it on PS2, PC or what?

Hey Cory, you just don't know how we gamers outhere feel about the GOW Series man, we just wanted more out of it that's all and as for what you said "As for your desire for Dave to direct the third one, if there ever is a third one." You know well that's bullshit Cory I know for sure there will be a GOW3 and tell those mother fuckers at Sony to be limitless on GOW3 and we can blamed them being the bad guys.

P.S: I'm still pissed off that they were forced to cut a lot of good levels and CGI movies in the GOW Series.

Cory Barlog said...

Jeano,

No sony did not fuck us at all, in fact it was quite the opposite, they support this franchise to the fullest. But this is just the way game development works, you can not have an infinte amount of time and an infinte budget to make whatever you want. that is just not living in reality. I would love to never have to cut things, but I really don't know of a single game studio, that makes big games like this, that did not have to cut anything. It just does not happen in this business...or if it does I have not heard about it.

One thing to note though is that while I do not like to cut stuff, ultimatly it is my decision. So when things are removed from the game I am the guy to blame on that one, but understand that I don't cut just to cut. There is a very deliberate evaluation of the entire game whne I am looking into potential cuts. The overall quality is extremely important, and if somethign will not get done to the quality level that we have set for ourselves, and we know there will not be enough time to do it, then it does nto stay in.

As far as the CGI movies, its cool you dig them so much, but I personally would love to see more of thatstuff take place during gameplay. This way there is less time just passivly watching and more time doing...the very essence of why I play games.

Special Edition huh? I not so sure that is goign to happen, but who knows these days?

Yo what up Elmo,
maybe I'm into deep in the GOW Series, I know it's a video game, but there's something that been bugging me and maybe you can help me understand a few things.

In GOW2, when Kratos was talking with Atlas he said to him "Atlas!! You must trust me, much has changed since we last met" I think there should have been at least a story flashback CGI movie explaining, showing where and how they last met or something.

On the same token, Atlas said to him "I could have beaten Zeus if you haven't put me there". Now, how in the hell did Kratos put Atlas there? Atlas is a 100 times bigger than Kratos and how were Kratos able to chainned Atlas with all those big ass chains anyway?

The Titans were killed and captured during "The Great War", right? Was Kratos even born at that time or what? I thought Kratos was under Ares orders and the Sisters of Fate control the future of every one as well, couldn't they foreseen Kratos would be the Master of Time? Couldn't they foreseen he would be coming after them to their death or what?

I know it's just a video game, but there are still a lot twists that needed to be work on and Cory somewhat did not do that and that's why I'm still so pissed that I didn't get enough out of GOW2. Maybe I'm too much a die hard fan of the GOW Series just like the guy was talking on the DVD Bonus he wanted to see more in it.

Cory,

Congratulations on God of War 2! It's an amazing game and, in my opinion, even better than the first.

Unfortunately, I have a few nitpicks about the combat system and a suggestion to address them. I've had instances throughout the game when initiating advanced attacks by holding L1 and pressing, say, square. I would initiate the attack while surrounded by enemies when I'm not being attacked, and the enemies would advance and attack me while they're being hit. I understand that some attacks won't adversely affect significantly larger enemies, but these where about the size of Kratos.

What I would like to propose is having to hold down the attack button when executing advanced moves. Starting with L1, you would have to hold down square through the animation to fully execute the attack. Letting up on square would stop the attack and bring you back to blocking. This might even be more immersive because the player is still interacting and controlling the attack instead of initiating it and then watching. Being able to guide the attack with the left analog stick would also be helpful being that I've attacked air or walls many times with the L1 + triangle attack when the enemy dies half-way through or gets knocked out of the way.

Please consider these suggestions, of course, playtest them, and keep up the good work! I'm highly looking forward to GoW3!

"Couldn't they foreseen he would be coming after them to their death or what?"

Umm... they knew Kratos wanted to kill them. That's why Lakesis said "If you challenge us... you. will. die."

Idiot.

In response to your other questions, there's going to be another game that will explain it.

Imbecile.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was reading the GOW2 instruction booklet, on page 6 (Controls) where it says "ON THE GROUND BASICS" the Normal Attack is (X) and I thought it's supposed to be ([]), right? Light Attack is (/\) and I thought it's supposed to be Heavy Attack or Strong Attack, right? That's false advertisement and Sony can get sued for that as well.

Still from the instruction booklet they showed the picture of the gods (Hermes and Aphrodite) but they did not show anything about them of what they do in the game at all. I'm just curious though, they said Cronos is Zeus's father, right? How in the hell a big huge guys like Cronos had sex with that little woman Rheas and Cronos deserved to carry the Pandora Temple because he's too stupid and dumb, he ate his own children and he couln't tell the difference between a baby and a piece of rock, come on people!!

Still in the instruction booklet, they said Atlas is the brother of Prometheus, how in the hell they looked so different? By the gods, Atlas himself has 4 arms and Prometheus mostly looked human unless he was a big huge Titan like his brother Atlas and the almighty Zeus transfromed him into a human size to punish him for bringing the fire to the human race or something.

To all of you GOW fan crying little babies outhere, I like the GOW Series, but either they went deep in the Greek World to tell the story of Kratos or the teacher lied to me in class and I know it's just a video game on how the producers saw fit the Greek World, but things did not make any sense in GOW2 at all and I'm not bashing the game nor any ones, I'm just pointing things out some mistakes they made that's all folks.

Rhea herself was a titan and why she was shown to be so small in the game, I don't know? There's a lot of things in greek mythology that didn't make much since. Atlas & the other titans were somewhat altered for this game just to give a little more variety in their appearance. He did not have four arms originally. As far as Cronos goes, come on. Do you really think something that big could tell what the hell he was swallowing when it was so small? You say that you can't make any sense out of the game? If you can't be at least open-minded enough to enjoy this game then greek mythology is just not for you. As far as the instruction book goes, I guess that's on Sony. I hadn't noticed it before, but you're right. As for the gods in the book. None of them are shown for what they are in the game. That section is there just to give you a little bit of each characters background.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm worried about the GOW on psp. For those who have played GOW2 you'll know what I'm talking about. From the end of GOW2 you can say that there is something huge getting ready to go down. I just don't want to see this huge thing start out on the psp. I think it should explode on to the screen on the PS3. I do have faith in Cory and the team, but I just don't know what to think about this? Of course it hasn't been totally confirmed that this one will start where GOW2 left off. It could tie into GOW2 through older evnts that took place between the other games. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Finally! I was so ashamed and irritated when Shinobier beat me to completing the challenge I thought up (General Kratos: Titan Mode: No Update Run). Although I could not have asked for a better person to do it before me since he is highly skilled and has the proper means to record it. I have beat my own GK:TM:NUR and was surprised when it gave me a "Titan" rank overall after completing it..I don't remember doing it that well..
~I can't wait to hear more about the PSP title and how it is handled
---I am rooting for Ladon on the PS3 GoW (100 heads of WIN)

Where did he record it? and how? An entire game? It's not a speed run so it's still quite long.

Link or it didn't happen.

Soul you bum. I know your not an embecile. Find him on YouTube. It ISN'T hard since he is the only one with videos up of the challenge I thought up. Apparently he liked it cause he keeps doing variations to old videos in it.

Mike, what makes you think I know? If I had a worthy camera of at least his (Shinobier's) calibur my videos (such as the 999,999 hit combo and GoW1 exploits) wouldn't look like shit. You could ask him if you do as Soul/Vitali must do now. I'd be disappointed if I needed to provide links to find his YouTube videos. I'm called "BigVEE" there. You could always go through my favorites to find him..there is A LOT of his videos in there.

You disgrace the great "Anonymous" with your shit attempts at my greatness. I don't need the recognition of a fool.

==HELP==HELP==HELP==HELP==HELP==

After 1 week, I finally found a way to beat that prick Theseus and right now at this minute, I'm playing GOW2 on Titan Mode and the Barbarian King is beating my ass down. I can't even unmount him from his stupid horse.

I checked all the Strategy Guides for tips and none of them did not provide any help at all. The people from www.gamefaqs.com said to stay in front of the horse and when I do that the damn horse is kicking with its front legs.

Does any body out there have a trick or a code to beat the Barbarian King or what? And I'm still having a hard time on the 2nd level in the Challenge of the Titan. Why did they have to make such a good game this damn difficult to play and it's taking the fun out of it as well.

I can't wait to beat GOW2 on Titan Mode and replay it again to get my revenge on all them bastards who gave me headaches and made me buy another controller, because this stupid game really can raise your blood pressure through the roof.

Any help, ideas, comments, tricks, or strategies would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Soul: If I were to do that I'd be risking every fool here getting trojans. I can't individually warn them whilst hitting my target without tracking our mutual friend first.

Anonymous: I'm going to refer to you as "Tad" since you do not deserve to be referred to as Anonymous. The term "embecile" is used in the Urban dictionary as a slang spelling to imbecile. What would grammar matter to a fool such as yourself anyway? Are you some sort of ITG? You seem butthurt about something..butsecks?

jeano: If it is just the first stage of the Barbarian King you need help with on Titan Mode:
-Like the GameFAQs guys are saying, you should stand in front of the horse while he isn't running, BLOCK its kicks and/or Barbarian King swipes, and attack him between them with whatever you feel will best work. "Square, Triangle" works well enough. Unless you were playing in a Titan Mode NUR/NUR+ or GK:TM:NUR I don't see any reason to give a lot of tips for this fight.
~When/If you need assistance in the future I am willing to help you

Yo what up Tucson,
how're things going in the Boogie Down Bronx? I'm glad that you're working and it'll keep you out of troubles too.

DAMN!! you're working at Applebee's, it's not the best job but it's better than nothing and you got to start some where. Back in the days, my 1st job was Burger King and I went to work for a Temp Agency doing messenger and it was tough doing it in Manhattan streets working for $4.15/hr and that's why I know NYC like a book.

I like to eat at that place specially their T-Bone steaks, their big thick juicy Deluxe Cheese Burgers, their Ribeye steaks and the big Mucho Mudslide drinks with an extra-shot in it.

Them chicks who work there are hot good looking too, as much as I like Applebee's I'm not giving up Hooters for it LLOOOLLLL....
As for GOW2, fuck it and I gave up on playing it on Titan Mode, I kept on getting killed and I hate games like that cause it takes the fun out of it.

There were a couple of games that I wanted to play and I went to EB Games got Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Devil May Cry 3 (Special Edition), Tomb Raider Legend, Rogue Galaxy and the list goes on.... I never was a Tomb Raider fan, I've heard a lot of bad reviews about it and I saw why.

I don't mean no disrespect to the Tomb Raider fans outhere, the game is good, the graphics are nice, but the game play and the camera angle sucked BIG TIME and that's their problem since the very 1st Tomb Raider game and Eidos/Crystal Dynamics never tried to fix it at all.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent is good, but what's the deal with the rookie? That guy is so dumb and it's a down fall to the Splinter Cell series. Devil May Cry 3 is better than DMC2 as always the 1st DMC game was much better. Rogue Galaxy, what can I say that haven't already been said and I think it's way better than some of the Final Fantasy games.

P.S: Yo Tucson, keep your heads up, do your thing, go to work, keep going to college for you to pass those classes, graduate for you to get a better job, save your money, bang that new chick, do not get her pregnant and stay out of troubles in the mean time thanks for the tips and I'm out.

NYC Represents.

==MIKE==MIKE==MIKE==MIKE==MIKE==MIKE==

Yo Mike,
What up man? What's good in Amsterdam? How're things going with the new chick in town? Did you blaze her already? You never said anything about the other chick that you've met at the gym, what's up with that man? Are you guys done and over with it or what? Was it just a hit and run or what? Too bad I don't speak Dutch.

As for me, things are slow in the Dutch Country a.k.a Pennsylvania and compare to NYC it's very different life and it's hard for me to get use to, other than that things are going ok, I'm going back to school to be a PC Tech or a Network Administrator and those scumbags didn't grant me the scholarship that I was hoping for, I had to take a loan for the school which is another bill adds up on top to what I already have, I'm telling you those bureaucrats in the USA are really something else man.

As for GOW2, fuck it and I gave up playing it on Titan Mode, I'm at the Barbarian King level, I kept on getting killed by his stupid hammer and that damn horse is kicking Kratos like crazy and I hate games like that cause it takes the fun out of it.

Have you heard anything about the new Tomb Raider Anniversary? I know that you're good at researching and when you get a chance check to see what the GOW for PSP is about because I read it's going to be GOW1 with a few tweaks and I heard it's going to be the story of Kratos after he became the new GOW, does that mean he's going to have all of his powers during that whole game or what?

I also heard it's going to be a prequel to GOW3 and that would be a down fall to the series. Did you already get your GOW2 copy? Have you play it yet? Since you've played it, can you tell us what were the differences between the US version and the European version? Which one did you like better the US version or the European version?

In the mean time I'm out, later.

i'm getting my god of war 2 copy tomorrow if everything goes well :) and about the psp god of war, it's going to be an all new story. it's a further fleshing out of the story for 1, 2 & 3. as for tombraider:

http://www.tombraider.com/anniversary/

and about that girl back then :) it was no succes, cause she stayed loyal to her friend. but this new 1 will be a succes for sure, as she really likes me ;) so thats a good start haha.

but i will surely write about the diffrences. 2 are already known: 1 if you want 2 disks you have to buy the special edition: 2 we have no HD mode.
